I have this theory that people from Quebec are just trying to piss the rest of us off so that we vote yes in the next referendum. I just left one of my classes because I wasn't in the mood to have my entire culture, especially my native language, mocked openly in front of me. Just a few weeks ago in this very course, the other girls and I had to defend our language when the teacher wrote several french words on the board: fleuve - rivière - courrants - ruisseau - etc...
then she said "and what do they have in english to describe this?" and she underlined the whole thing and wrote "river"
screw you Elyane, we spoke up and said "noooo there's seaway, river, rapids, brook, stream, etc..." PUT IN PLACE, JOB DONE.
but today she openly mocked us again and the whole class decided to pitch in. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like going to class and being made to look like an idiot. The teacher was complaining about how the french language is at risk of extinction and english is to blame. How dare some anglophone living in Montreal have an english answernig machine message at their work? Apparently that's illegal here, Law 101 prohibits that. Also, grade school children are required by law to go to a francophone is they're francophone and an anglophone school if they're anything but francophone. I sort of tuned her out and when break came, I left to write this angry journal entry. Maudits français!
My goal today: avoid anything french at all costs. shouldn't be hard, it's friday and it's raining.

If anything, the federal government should allow us to preserve Newfoundland dialects of french and english, given their relative amount of speakers.
